Fuel Subsidy: Innoson Introduces Gas-Powered Vehicles

In a groundbreaking achievement for Nigeria’s automotive
industry, Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing

(IVM), the country’s indigenous
automobile company, has successfully mass-produced a wide range of Compressed
Natural Gas (CNG) buses. This development comes as a timely alternative for
Nigerians grappling with the escalating prices of petrol and diesel.

The grand unveiling of the impressive array of CNG vehicles
took place at IVM’s state-of-the-art factory in Nnewi, Anambra State. The
vehicles showcased encompassed a diverse selection, including trucks,
mini-buses, ambulances, long buses, SUVs, and various other models.

Dr. Innocent Chukwuma, the Chief Executive Officer of IVM,
expressed his unwavering commitment to meeting the demands of Nigerians while
assuring the public about the safety of CNG vehicles and the availability of an
extensive range of cars. He emphasized that IVM manufactures vehicles based on
market demand, and the production of these buses was a direct response to the
prevailing demand. He further highlighted the company’s adaptability and
responsiveness by referencing their increased production of ambulances during
the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Chukwuma affirmed that IVM is fully
prepared to cater to the needs of the populace.

CNG vehicles represent a viable solution to the over-reliance
on a limited number of vehicle types. Dr. Chukwuma expounded on the
significance of CNG vehicles, stating, “The CNG vehicles are a solution,
that’s why we produce them. We made space for CNG, LNG, and Fuel so that anyone
available in an area can be used to drive the vehicles. Electric cars, biogas,
and solar-powered vehicles are also produced in this factory.”

Representing the Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Christian
Udechukwu, the Commissioner for Industry, highlighted the state’s dedication to
providing solutions in response to the challenges Nigerians face due to the
removal of subsidies. Mr. Udechukwu acknowledged Innoson’s renewable
technologies, such as CNG, LNG, and solar-powered systems, as potential
contributors to Nigeria’s mass transport system and broader national solutions.

The removal of subsidies on fuel has caused significant
shockwaves, leading to a nearly 200% increase in fuel prices and subsequent
unrest among various labor unions and Nigerians at large. Rising transportation
costs have further exacerbated the situation. To alleviate these challenges,
Mr. Udechukwu suggested that the government introduce mass transit systems
powered by alternative energy sources, including gas and solar. By offering a
greater variety of energy options, such as those provided by Innoson, the
chances of stabilizing fuel prices are increased, thereby addressing the issues
faced by the populace.

Mr. Udechukwu further emphasized the importance of local
manufacturing and empowered industries in Nigeria to bolster the economy and
reduce the national debt profile. He called for industries and all stakeholders
to prioritize local solutions, citing Innoson as a prime example.

Mr. Cornel Osigwe, the Head of Corporate Communications at
IVM, underscored the advantages of Natural Gas Vehicles and emphasized the need
to support local manufacturers. He highlighted the superior combustion rate of
gas compared to fuel, rendering gas vehicles more environmentally friendly. He
further explained that while Nigerians have traditionally been accustomed to
petrol cars, the abundance of natural gas now provides sustainable alternatives
for all.

Transportation plays a pivotal role in economic development,
facilitating the efficient movement of people and goods. Given Nigeria’s
current stage of development, better transportation options are imperative to
alleviate the growing dependence on petrol and diesel, considering the needs of
over 200 million individuals. Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing, as an indigenous
car manufacturing company, has risen to the occasion, producing hundreds of
CNG-powered vehicles tailored to Nigerian and African roads.

With the introduction of these innovative CNG buses, Innoson
Vehicle Manufacturing has not only showcased its technical prowess and
commitment to meeting market demand but also provided Nigerians with a
sustainable and environmentally friendly solution to the challenges posed by
rising fuel prices. The company’s efforts align with the government’s objective
of promoting local manufacturing, empowering industries, and diversifying the
country’s energy options for a more prosperous future.
