Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has formally recognized Asari Dokubo, a prominent Niger Delta activist, as a traditional ruler in the state. Dokubo was named the Amayanabo of Torusarama-Piri Elem Kalabari and received his certificate of recognition during the traditional rulers’ quarterly general meeting held in Port Harcourt on Tuesday.

The event, attended by influential monarchs and government officials, also saw the recognition of three other traditional rulers in Rivers State. Certificates of recognition were presented to:

  • Winston Odiye Alamina, Oputibeya XII, Amayanabo of the Koniju Kingdom
  • Eze Noble Friday Uwoh, Eze Igbu-Ehuda IV
  • Ike Ehie, Eze Igbu Orlukwor

Commitment to Peace and Development

Governor Fubara, addressing the traditional rulers during the ceremony, emphasized the critical role of monarchs in fostering unity and peace within their communities.

“We reaffirmed our commitment to tirelessly work for the peace, progress, and prosperity of Rivers State,” Fubara stated in a post shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account. “I urged these esteemed leaders to use their positions to foster unity, promote peace, and strengthen harmony within their respective domains.”

Asari Dokubo’s Recognition

Asari Dokubo, a well-known figure in the Niger Delta region, has long been involved in advocacy for the development of the area. His recognition as the Amayanabo of Torusarama-Piri Elem Kalabari marks a significant milestone in his community leadership role.

Dokubo expressed gratitude to the Rivers State government for the honor and pledged to use his new position to promote the interests of his people and contribute to the state’s progress.

The Role of Traditional Rulers

Traditional rulers in Rivers State play a vital role in maintaining cultural heritage, ensuring peaceful coexistence among communities, and partnering with the government to drive development initiatives.

Governor Fubara reiterated his administration’s commitment to strengthening the traditional institution as a key pillar for fostering societal stability and development.

Reactions and Significance

The recognition of the four monarchs, particularly Asari Dokubo, has generated discussions across the state. Many view the move as a strategic effort to consolidate peace and enhance collaboration between the government and traditional institutions in addressing the challenges facing the Niger Delta region.

The ceremony underscores the Fubara administration’s dedication to preserving traditional leadership while leveraging it as a tool for community engagement and state development.
