In a significant development, the Recording Academy (GRAMMY)
has taken a step to embrace and
honor the vibrant rhythms and distinctive
melodies of African music by introducing a brand new award category for the
66th GRAMMY Awards in 2024. This latest addition, titled “Best African
Music Performance,” was unanimously approved during the Academy’s
semi-annual Board of Trustees meeting held in May 2023, as announced in an
official statement on Tuesday. The decision to include this category reflects
the Academy’s commitment to recognizing the immense diversity and global impact
of African music.
Harvey Mason Jr., CEO of the Recording Academy, expressed his
enthusiasm for the introduction of the new category and shed light on the
Academy’s rationale behind it. He stated, “The Recording Academy is proud
to announce these latest Category changes to our Awards process. These changes
reflect our commitment to actively listen and respond to the feedback from our
music community, accurately represent a diverse range of relevant musical
genres, and stay aligned with the ever-evolving musical landscape.”
The “Best African Music Performance” category will
shine a spotlight on recordings that showcase the local expressions from
various parts of the African continent. This category will encompass a wide
range of music genres, including but not limited to Afrobeat, Afro-fusion, Afro
Pop, Afrobeats, Alte, Amapiano, Bongo Flava, Genge, Kizomba, Chimurenga, High
Life, Fuji, Kwassa, Ndombolo, Mapouka, Ghanaian Drill, Afro-House, South African
Hip-Hop, and Ethio Jazz, among others.
Mason emphasized that the introduction of this new category
signifies the Academy’s commitment to recognizing and appreciating a broader
array of artists. He stated, “By introducing these new categories, we are
able to acknowledge and appreciate a broader array of artists.”
This momentous decision ensures the representation and
celebration of African music, its creators, and the unique cultural narratives
they bring to the global stage. Mason added, “We are excited to honor and
celebrate the creators and recordings in these categories, while also exposing
a wider range of music to fans worldwide.”
Alongside the “Best African Music Performance”
category, the Recording Academy has also introduced other new categories,
namely “Best Alternative Jazz Album” and “Best Pop Dance
Recording.” These additions further highlight the Academy’s commitment to
embracing diverse musical genres and recognizing outstanding achievements in
various fields of music.
