Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has called out President Bola Tinubu over his 2022 campaign promise on electricity supply following another failure of Nigeria’s national power grid.
In a statement shared on his verified X account on Wednesday, Obi recalled Tinubu’s pledge that Nigerians should deny him a second term if he failed to deliver stable electricity within four years, noting that the power sector’s continued instability raised serious concerns.
Obi pointed out that the national grid had collapsed twice in January 2026 alone, even before the end of the month, adding that similar failures occurred roughly a dozen times in 2025.
According to him, the repeated breakdowns directly contradict the assurances given by the current administration and should alarm citizens.
“This situation runs contrary to the promise made and ought to worry every patriotic Nigerian,” Obi said.
The former Anambra State governor also criticised Tinubu’s frequent overseas trips, observing that the President was currently in Turkey while major domestic challenges persisted.
He compared Nigeria’s power generation capacity with Turkey’s, noting that the European nation produces and distributes over 120,000 megawatts of electricity, while Nigeria struggles with less than five per cent of that figure.
Obi described the contrast as “striking and painful,” urging the President to prioritise solving internal problems rather than embarking on foreign engagements.
“Our appeal is simple: stay at home and confront the nation’s problems,” he said, warning that continued neglect could see Nigerians hearing of trips to more distant countries while pressing issues remain unresolved.
He also lamented what he described as an excessive focus on the 2027 elections instead of governance, calling on Nigerians to demand accountability and responsible leadership.
“We should be joining hands to insist on good governance and to save Nigerians from the hardship and indignity caused by persistent leadership failures,” Obi added.
