Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris is set to release a medical report on Saturday confirming her fitness for the presidency, her campaign announced. This move is seen as an effort to increase pressure on her Republican opponent, Donald Trump, to provide more transparency regarding his own health.
An adviser to the 59-year-old Harris campaign stated that the medical report would conclude that “she possesses the physical and mental resiliency required to successfully execute the duties of the presidency.” The Harris team aims to highlight the issue of physical and mental health, particularly given Trump’s age and his reluctance to release detailed health records.
Trump, 78, became the oldest presidential nominee in U.S. history after 81-year-old President Joe Biden withdrew from the 2024 race in July. Biden’s withdrawal followed concerns about his mental sharpness, which surfaced after a challenging debate performance against Trump. Biden’s exit from the race led to Harris becoming the Democratic candidate for president.
While Trump’s age has been noted, it has not significantly impacted his polling numbers, as he remains locked in a tight race with Harris for the November 5 election. However, Harris’s campaign has drawn attention to recent reports questioning Trump’s health. The New York Times published articles expressing concern that Trump has yet to disclose essential medical details. The articles also analyzed Trump’s speeches, describing them as increasingly long, confused, and vulgar—potential signs of cognitive decline, according to some experts.
Though Trump insists that he is in good health, he has not provided a comprehensive medical report during the campaign. In late 2023, his former White House doctor, Ronny Jackson, issued a brief statement declaring Trump to be in “excellent” health, but the report lacked specifics, and it did not disclose what medical tests Trump had undergone during a physical in September 2023.
Trump has also faced scrutiny following a 2023 rally in Pennsylvania, where he was grazed by a bullet in an assassination attempt. His former doctor reassured the public that Trump was recovering well after the incident.
The former president has often boasted about passing a cognitive test during his first term, but during a public address, he mistakenly referred to Dr. Jackson as “Ronny Johnson.”
If Trump wins the upcoming election, he would be 82 years old at the end of his second term. The focus on health and fitness is expected to play a central role as the campaign unfolds, with both candidates facing increasing calls for transparency.
