Former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has dismissed allegations of corruption following his impeachment, describing the claims as “baseless and fictitious.” Obasa addressed his supporters during a rally at his residence in Joel Ogunnaike GRA, Ikeja, on Saturday, days after his removal from office.
Obasa, who represented Agege Constituency I, maintained that he was not fazed by the impeachment, emphasizing the need for adherence to due process. “If I am not Speaker, that’s not the end of the world. If you want to claim that I am corrupt, please prove it,” he said.
The former Speaker alleged that his impeachment was orchestrated in his absence and accused the Lagos State Commissioner of Police of complicity. According to Obasa, over 200 security agents, led by the Police Commissioner, stormed the Assembly complex and his residences in Agege and Ikeja, detaining his family indoors during the process.
Mocking one of the accusations leveled against him, Obasa ridiculed claims that a gate construction cost N16 billion. “Is it the wall of Jericho?” he quipped, dismissing the allegations as absurd.
Obasa was impeached on January 13 by more than two-thirds of the 40-member Lagos State Assembly over alleged misconduct and other offences. In a historic development, his deputy, Mojisola Meranda, was immediately elected as the new Speaker, making her the first female to lead the legislative house in the South-West state.
First elected into the Lagos Assembly in 2007, Obasa served as Speaker since June 2015, holding the position for nearly eight years before his recent ousting. Despite his removal, the embattled former Speaker has vowed to clear his name and continues to enjoy the backing of his supporters.
