Two people have been confirmed dead and three others injured following an air defence operation that intercepted a ballistic missile near the outskirts of Abu Dhabi, authorities said on Thursday.
According to a statement released by the Abu Dhabi Government Media Office, the casualties were caused by falling debris from the intercepted missile. The incident occurred outside the main city area, where fragments reportedly struck vehicles and nearby surroundings.
“The incident resulted in the deaths of two unidentified individuals, three injuries, and damage to a number of cars,” the media office said in a post shared on X (formerly Twitter).
Emergency response teams were quickly deployed to the scene to provide medical assistance to the injured and assess the extent of the damage. The wounded individuals were transported to nearby medical facilities for treatment, though officials have not disclosed details regarding their condition.
Authorities have yet to release further information about the origin or intended target of the missile. However, the interception highlights ongoing security concerns in the region, where air defence systems remain on high alert against potential aerial threats.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident, while officials continue to monitor the situation and ensure public safety.
