As the Edo State governorship election draws closer, the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) has called on all stakeholders to approach the exercise as a democratic process rather than a conflict. The council stressed that the election should focus on selecting leaders committed to good governance, accountability, and development.
In a statement issued after a stakeholders’ meeting in Benin, the state capital, IPAC’s National Chairman, Yusuf Dantalle, urged political parties, candidates, and supporters to prioritize peace, equity, and justice. He emphasized that elections are not a battleground but an opportunity for citizens to exercise their democratic rights.
Dantalle said, “To all stakeholders, let us remember, election is not war. It is simply an exercise in a democracy, where we choose leaders who will promote good governance, accountability, and development.” He also urged collaboration among stakeholders to create an environment conducive to credible and transparent elections.
In addition to calling for peaceful conduct, IPAC encouraged voters to choose candidates based on their manifestos, track records, and leadership qualities, rejecting any form of vote-buying. “We urge you to recognize that the will of the electorate is sacrosanct and must be respected. Leadership should be about selfless service to the people,” Dantalle said.
The IPAC chairman also appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies to remain neutral and impartial during the election. He stressed that their roles are vital in maintaining public trust and confidence in the electoral process.
With the governorship election approaching, Dantalle urged voters to participate fully, saying, “I call on voters in next Saturday’s governorship election in Edo State to come out en masse and exercise their civic duty without hindrance.”
IPAC’s message highlights the importance of peaceful and democratic engagement in the upcoming Edo State election, urging all parties to respect the principles of democracy and the will of the people.
