Former Minister of Information, Prof. Jerry Gana, has called on parents to instill biblical values in their children, emphasizing that such teachings are crucial for national transformation. Gana made this statement at the Grand Finale of the “2024 Champion of Champions National Bible Quiz Competition,” held on Wednesday in Abuja.
The event, organized by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in collaboration with Voice of Evangelism International (VOEI), focused on the significance of spiritual integrity in both personal growth and national development.
Gana highlighted that understanding and adhering to biblical principles are vital for overcoming societal challenges, including poverty, and for achieving success in various aspects of life. He stressed the transformative power of the Word of God and urged Nigerians to prioritize Bible study as a means of fostering national development.
Praising the event’s sponsor, Archbishop Emeka Agwu, for his dedication to promoting biblical knowledge among youth, Gana cited Joshua 1:8 to underline the importance of meditating on and living according to the Scriptures. He pointed out that character, integrity, and a strong moral foundation are essential for good governance and societal prosperity.
Gana warned that neglecting the responsibility of teaching biblical values could lead to moral decay and urged Nigerians to pray for wise and capable leaders, as effective leadership is key to national transformation and prosperity.
Archbishop Agwu, the sponsor of the quiz and General Overseer of VOEI, also emphasized the importance of making Bible study a central aspect of Christian life, particularly in these challenging times. He commended the participants for their dedication to understanding the Holy Scriptures and expressed confidence that the knowledge they gained would empower them to lead impactful Christian lives.
Agwu highlighted that the primary goal of the competition was to ignite a passionate interest in Bible studies within the Christian community. Reflecting on the theme, “Remain in the Word,” derived from John 8:31, he urged believers to root themselves in biblical teachings, especially as the world faces increasing ungodliness.
He also warned that the end times were imminent, calling on Christians to awaken from spiritual complacency and actively engage in efforts to foster spiritual revival. According to Agwu, the Bible Quiz is not merely an academic exercise but a spiritual pursuit aimed at deepening understanding and application of biblical principles.
Venerable Princewill Ireoba, Director of Ecumenism and Interfaith at CAN and Chairman of the Planning Committee, praised the organizers for the initiative, noting that the program brought Christians together across different denominations. He emphasized that the Word of God is the common thread that unites Christians as a church and affirmed CAN’s support for programs like the quiz to strengthen faith.
