In a poignant display of compassion and support, Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, bid farewell to 137 Kuriga schoolchildren on Thursday as they embarked on their journey home to reunite with their families in Kuriga, Chikun Local Government Area. The heartfelt send-off marked the end of a traumatic chapter for the children, who endured a harrowing abduction ordeal at the hands of terrorists on March 7 before being liberated in Zamfara State.
During a solemn ceremony, Governor Sani announced a generous donation of N10 million to the family of their late teacher, Mallam Abubakar, who tragically passed away while in captivity due to health complications. In a gesture of solidarity, Sani also committed to providing scholarships up to university level for the children of the deceased educator.
Among the rescued pupils was Isah Abubakar, one of Mallam Abubakar’s children, who bore witness to his father’s tragic demise in the bandits’ custody, adding a poignant layer of personal grief to the collective sorrow.
Governor Sani, who expedited his return from Abuja to preside over the farewell ceremony, reiterated his unwavering dedication to the welfare and education of all 137 rescued children. Through the Uba Sani Foundation, established over 16 years ago, the governor pledged continuous support to ensure the children’s educational aspirations are realized.
Furthermore, Governor Sani reassured the Kuriga community of ongoing efforts to rehabilitate the area, emphasizing the government’s steadfast commitment to restoring peace and security. The proactive measures underscored the administration’s resolve to safeguard its citizens and extend vital assistance to affected families during times of crisis.
In commendation of the swift and decisive action taken by the armed forces in rescuing the abducted schoolchildren, the Defence Headquarters lauded their unwavering dedication to national security. Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, praised the armed forces’ resolute commitment to protecting citizens and combating terror threats, reaffirming their pivotal role in maintaining peace and stability across the nation.
