The Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA) has pledged prompt settlement of insurance claims for individuals, families, and businesses affected by the devastating fire incidents that engulfed Afriland Towers and Emab Plaza in Lagos on September 16.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the NIA Chairman, Kunle Ahmed, expressed deep sympathy to all those impacted by the twin disasters, which resulted in significant loss of lives and property. He assured victims that the insurance industry stands firmly by them in their time of grief and recovery.
“The Nigerian Insurers Association extends its heartfelt condolences to all individuals, families, and businesses affected by the tragic fire incidents,” Ahmed said. “We deeply mourn the loss and stand in solidarity with those who are grieving and rebuilding in the aftermath of this unfortunate event.”
Ahmed disclosed that the association has already identified member companies that provided insurance coverage for the affected properties and emphasized that all valid insurance claims will be honored without delay.
“As the umbrella body for insurance and reinsurance companies in Nigeria, we assure all affected parties that losses covered under valid insurance policies will be duly compensated by the respective insurance companies,” he stated. “The industry remains committed to upholding its promise of protection and financial recovery in times of crisis.”
The NIA chairman also used the opportunity to urge businesses and individuals to adopt insurance as a critical risk management tool, noting that disasters such as the recent fires underscore the importance of adequate insurance coverage.
“In a world where unforeseen events can have far-reaching consequences, the importance of being insured cannot be overstated,” Ahmed added.
The September 16 fires, which swept through the iconic Afriland Towers and the busy Emab Plaza, caused extensive damage and disrupted commercial activities in the affected areas. Authorities are still investigating the causes of the incidents, while emergency services continue recovery and safety operations.
The NIA’s assurance is expected to provide relief to many victims as they begin the difficult process of rebuilding their lives and businesses.
