In a remarkable achievement, Aminat Yusuf, a
dedicated and hardworking law student at
Lagos State University (LASU), has
etched her name in the annals of the institution’s history. After four decades,
she has become the first undergraduate to attain a perfect Cumulative Grade
Point Average (CGPA) of 5.0.
The news of Aminat’s outstanding academic
record was revealed by Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, the esteemed vice-chancellor of
LASU, during a press briefing held on a Wednesday prior to the university’s
26th convocation ceremony scheduled for June 21. Olatunji-Bello proudly
announced that a total of 282 students, spanning the academic sessions of
2020/2021 and 2021/2022, had achieved first-class honors.
Amidst the celebration of exceptional academic
excellence, the vice-chancellor shared further details of Aminat Yusuf’s
accomplishment. As a student from the 2021/2022 academic session, Aminat would
receive a prestigious cash prize of N500,000 in recognition of her
extraordinary academic performance. Olatunji-Bello also highlighted another
exceptional student, Feyisayo Lopez, a graduate of physiology, who achieved a
remarkable CGPA of 4.91 in the 2021/2022 academic session.
Eager to express her joy and pride,
Olatunji-Bello declared, “With the total of 282 first-class graduating
students in the two academic sessions, the university is, therefore, graduating
her highest number of first-class students in her 40 years’ history.” She
provided a breakdown of the first-class graduates: 148 graduates from the
2020/2021 academic session, 128 graduates from the 2021/2022 academic session,
and an additional six graduates from the sandwich program (2022 Modular Year).
Amidst the wave of accomplishments, the
vice-chancellor revealed that a staggering 10,183 students would be graduating
from various programs, including diploma courses, undergraduate degrees,
postgraduate diplomas, academic master’s degrees, professional master’s
degrees, doctor of philosophy degrees, and professional doctoral degrees, in
the 2020/2021 and 2021/2022 academic sessions.
However, the highlight of the convocation
announcement remained Aminat Yusuf’s historic feat. Olatunji-Bello exclaimed
with delight, “I am also glad to announce that Yusuf Aminat Imoitesemeh,
with a CGPA of 5.00 (First Class Honours), is LASU’s best-graduating student in
history. I congratulate her, her family, and the Faculty of Law on this
laudable feat.”
The vice-chancellor further disclosed that the
convocation ceremony would be held in conjunction with the institution’s
40th-anniversary celebration, adding to the significance of the event. This
would be a momentous occasion for LASU, commemorating four decades of
educational excellence and growth.
Reflecting on the previous year’s
accomplishments, Olatunji-Bello recalled Adekunle Ogunkoya, a master’s degree
student in Religions and Peace Studies, who had also made history by becoming
the first student at LASU to achieve a perfect CGPA of 5.0 in a master’s
program. These incredible achievements only served to highlight the academic
prowess and commitment to excellence exhibited by LASU students.
As the university eagerly awaited the
convocation ceremony and anniversary celebration, the extraordinary
accomplishments of Aminat Yusuf and Adekunle Ogunkoya would be remembered as
shining examples of the dedication and pursuit of knowledge that defines the
spirit of Lagos State University.
