Nigerian Breweries Plc has undergone a significant transformation in its leadership structure, marked by the resignation of Chairman Mr. Asue Ighodalo. The revelation was made public through a notification by the company’s secretary, Mr. Uaboi Agbebaku, to the Nigerian Exchange Ltd in Lagos.
Ighodalo’s decision to step down is driven by his aspiration to engage in public service, a move aligned with corporate governance standards. His official resignation from the board and chairmanship is slated for December 31, 2023. Expressing mixed emotions, Ighodalo characterized the decision as a painful sacrifice allowing him to fully dedicate himself to this new endeavor.
In his statement, Ighodalo shared, “It is with heartfelt regret that I announce my resignation as the Chairman of the Board of Nigerian Breweries Plc effective Dec. 31, 2023. After extensive deliberations, I have decided to offer myself for public service to our dear country. It is my pride to have been part of such a formidable organisation well-positioned to meet the opportunities and challenges in Nigeria’s ever-changing business environment.”
To navigate this transition, Sijbe Hiemstra, the longest-serving director, steps into the role of interim chairman, effective January 1, 2024. This interim period will involve overseeing the board’s affairs and facilitating the selection of a substantive chairman.
The board also noted the completion of Ndidi Nwuneli’s tenure as an independent non-executive director. Subsequently, Stella Ojekwe-Onyejeli assumes the position of Non-Executive Director, effective January 1, 2023, filling the vacancy on the board. Ojekwe-Onyejeli brings extensive knowledge and experience as a risk manager in the financial services industry, with a proven track record in enterprise risk management, business planning, internal audit, and analytical skills. Currently serving on the boards of Coronation Insurance Plc and Rand Merchant Bank, among others, she adds valuable expertise to Nigerian Breweries.
These strategic changes underscore Nigerian Breweries’ commitment to ensuring robust leadership and effective governance in navigating the dynamic business landscape.
