NBA legend LeBron James announced on Wednesday that he is taking an indefinite break from social media, citing frustration with the prevalence of negativity in sports coverage.
The Los Angeles Lakers star, who boasts a massive following of approximately 212 million on Instagram and X (formerly Twitter), shared his decision shortly after amplifying a post by Rich Kleiman, long-time agent of fellow NBA star Kevin Durant.
Kleiman’s post criticized the negative focus in sports reporting, stating:
“With so much hate and negativity in the world today, it confuses me why some of the national sports media still think that the best way to cover sports is through negative takes. I, for one, find it all a waste of breath.”
LeBron echoed the sentiment by sharing the post with a one-word response: “AMEN!!”
Shortly afterward, James announced his hiatus, writing: “And with that said, I’ll holla at y’all! Getting off social media for the time being. Y’all take care.”
Not His First Break from Social Media
This is not the first time the NBA’s all-time leading scorer has stepped back from social platforms. In the past, James has taken similar breaks, particularly to focus on basketball. However, this time, his decision appears to be influenced by mounting online criticism and what he perceives as unwarranted negativity in sports discourse.
Frustration with Internet Criticism
James hinted at his growing discontent with online backlash during a press conference on Tuesday, following the Lakers’ win over the Utah Jazz. During the game, rookie Dalton Knecht made headlines with a 37-point performance.
Reflecting on Knecht’s success, James revealed he had been aware of the rookie’s potential since his collegiate career at Tennessee, saying:
“Everybody on the internet calls me a liar all the time. They say I lie about everything. So what am I now? I’ve been said it. I watched him. I watched Tennessee a lot.”
James’s remarks pointed to a broader issue of skepticism and criticism directed at him online, which may have contributed to his decision to disengage.
Impact of the Hiatus
LeBron’s move to step away from social media comes at a time when his team, the Lakers, continues its early-season campaign. His absence from platforms where he frequently shares insights, motivational posts, and personal moments may leave a void for his fans.
While there is no timeline for his return, James’s decision highlights the growing impact of online negativity on athletes and public figures in an increasingly digital age.
