The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has apprehended a man identified as Kayode Cole for issuing a death threat against the Commission’s Executive Chairman, Ola Olukoyede.
According to EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale, Cole was arrested at the Lugbe area of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. The arrest was made following Cole’s threat against Olukoyede, which he made through his Instagram handle, “1billionsecretss,” while commenting on a story posted by popular Instagram blogger, Instablog9ja, on February 1, 2024.
Instablog9ja had shared a story alleging that a religious sect was involved in laundering money for terrorists, with proceeds amounting to N7 billion traced to another religious group by the EFCC Chairman.
Reacting to the post, Cole wrote in the comment section, threatening that the EFCC chairman would be dead in six months. During interrogation, Cole claimed he was only seeking attention.
He will be transferred to the appropriate authority for further investigation and prosecution.
The incident occurred after EFCC Chairman Olukoyede revealed during a dialogue on “Youth, Religion, and the Fight against Corruption” at the Musa Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja, on January 30, 2024. He disclosed that the commission had uncovered instances of money laundering involving religious organizations, including one sect laundering money for terrorists and another shielding a money launderer.
