Manchester United has expressed interest in Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah as the 25-year-old may be set to leave Stamford Bridge this summer. The inquiry comes amid reports that Chalobah is “disappointed” over his exclusion from Chelsea’s pre-season tour to the USA.
Journalist Ben Jacobs disclosed the development to GIVEMESPORT on Monday, noting, “Trevoh Chalobah is contracted to Chelsea until 2028, so he can be quite selective about his next club. He is naturally disappointed to have been excluded from Chelsea’s pre-season tour of America but won’t exit unless the club is right.”
Chalobah, a product of Chelsea’s youth academy, has made 58 Premier League appearances since his debut in 2021. However, new Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca does not prioritize retaining the defender. The centre-back position is deemed overcrowded due to recent signings and players returning from injury.
While no concrete offers have been made for Chalobah, Chelsea reportedly hopes for a transfer fee of around £25 million, potentially holding out for closer to £30 million. Jacobs added, “Multiple Premier League clubs have enquired, including Manchester United, but Chelsea doesn’t have any offers yet.”
Manchester United is keen to bolster its defensive options following the departures of Raphael Varane and Willy Kwambala. Chalobah, who can play both centre-back and right-back, could be a cost-effective and versatile option for United compared to other targets like Matthijs de Ligt and Jarrad Branthwaite.
Described as a “monster” by Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig, Chalobah currently earns £50,000 per week at Chelsea. Despite his popularity among Chelsea fans, it appears new manager Maresca has different plans for the squad’s composition.
In related news, Manchester United is also reportedly in talks with the agent of Bayern Munich right-back Noussair Mazraoui as they continue to explore defensive reinforcements.
The potential transfer of Chalobah to Manchester United could signify a strategic move to strengthen their defensive lineup and adapt to the new challenges in the Premier League season.
