Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has pledged automatic employment for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members who excel during their service year in the state, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to merit-based opportunities.
Otti gave the assurance on Friday at the swearing-in ceremony of the 2026 Batch ‘A’, Stream 1 corps members at the NYSC permanent orientation camp in Umunna, Bende Local Government Area.
The governor said Abia prioritises excellence and competence over state of origin, stressing that corps members who demonstrate capacity, diligence and value addition in their places of primary assignment would be considered for employment in relevant public sector institutions.
“Our eyes will be on you wherever you are posted. Those who distinguish themselves and perform creditably will be offered automatic employment in appropriate establishments,” Otti said.
He noted that the state has a history of rewarding outstanding corps members, citing the current Head of Service, Mr Benson Ojeikere, who served in Abia as a corps member and rose to the top of the civil service despite being from Edo State.
Governor Otti added that his administration is deliberately investing in social infrastructure to make Abia attractive to skilled professionals, urging corps members to maximise the opportunities available during their service year.
He also reaffirmed the state government’s support for the NYSC scheme and directed the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba, to commence Phase II of the orientation camp upgrade. The proposed works include completion of internal roads, construction of a pavilion with finished ceilings and fans, and regrassing of the sports field.
Earlier, Sir Ananaba advised corps members to comply with camp rules and take the orientation programme seriously, noting that Abia rewards hard work and impactful community development initiatives. He thanked the governor for approving increased allowances and improving camp facilities.
Speaking on behalf of the NYSC Director-General, the Abia State Coordinator, Barrister Gladys Adama, described the orientation course as critical to preparing corps members for a productive service year. She commended the state government for sustained support, including camp rehabilitation, construction of internal roads, installation of 46 solar-powered street lights, improved feeding and enhanced state allowances.
A total of 1,820 corps members—804 males and 1,016 females—were sworn in during the ceremony. The oath of allegiance was administered by the Chief Judge of Abia State, Justice Lilian Agbai, represented by Justice C.E. Anyim.
