Security agencies have intensified efforts to secure the release of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information, and his wife following their abduction by gunmen in Katsina State.
A senior military source confirmed the incident on Saturday, assuring that authorities were taking steps to rescue the retired officer and his spouse.
“We have received the sad news of his abduction and that of his wife, and we will act accordingly to ensure he and his wife are rescued,” the source said.
Reports circulating among military veterans indicated that the former defence spokesman and his wife were kidnapped while travelling to Katsina State. The incident reportedly occurred in Matazu Local Government Area.
According to information shared on a military veterans’ platform, the couple was intercepted by armed assailants during their journey. The message further stated that their driver escaped the attack despite sustaining a gunshot wound.
“Maj. Gen. Rabe Abubakar, former Director of Defence Information, was kidnapped together with his wife on his way to Katsina today. He was kidnapped along Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State,” the message stated.
It added that the driver survived with injuries, while the retired general’s red Peugeot 406 vehicle was later found and secured at the Matazu Division of the Nigeria Police Force.
As of the time of filing this report, security agencies had not issued an official statement on the abduction. However, efforts to locate and rescue the victims are said to be ongoing.
The incident has raised fresh concerns over insecurity and the growing threat of kidnappings in parts of northern Nigeria.
