Abuja – The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on Wednesday, called for an investigation into allegations of bribery within the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS). This directive comes in the wake of a viral voice recording where popular Nigerian social media personality, Idris Okuneye, widely known as Bobrisky, made explosive claims regarding his sentencing and imprisonment.
In the voice note shared by Martins Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan, Bobrisky alleged that after his conviction and sentencing in April for the abuse of naira notes, his six-month prison term was not served in a correctional facility. Instead, he claimed that his influential godfather, in collaboration with the Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, arranged for him to serve his sentence in a private apartment.
Although Minister Tunji-Ojo did not specifically reference Bobrisky’s case, his order for a full investigation highlights concerns about possible misconduct and bribery within the correctional system. He emphasized the need for accountability and transparency in the service, urging swift and impartial scrutiny of the claims.
The investigation is expected to examine whether any high-ranking officials within the Nigerian Correctional Service were involved in corrupt practices, including offering preferential treatment to inmates with connections or financial influence.
The minister’s directive has sparked widespread public interest, with many Nigerians closely watching to see how the allegations are handled and what actions will be taken against any officials found guilty of involvement in the scandal.
This probe follows growing concerns about corruption in the country’s judicial and correctional systems, with calls for reforms to ensure fair and equal treatment for all citizens, regardless of their status or wealth.
