Minister’s Suspension Triggers Investigations and Villa Ban

ABUJA — Dr Betta Edu, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, found herself at the center of controversy as President Bola Tinubu suspended her from office amid a N585 million scandal. In a twist of events, the embattled minister, who had arrived at the Presidential Villa seeking an audience with the President, was denied access and subsequently banned from the premises.

President Tinubu’s suspension of Edu came with immediate effect, coupled with a directive for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to conduct a thorough investigation into the financial transactions of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs. The allegations against Edu include financial infractions related to the approval of a payment of N585 million into private accounts of a civil servant responsible for grants for vulnerable Nigerians in Akwa Ibom and other states.

The EFCC swiftly summoned Edu for interrogation and investigation in connection with the scandal. According to the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, the suspension aligns with President Tinubu’s commitment to maintaining high standards of integrity, transparency, and accountability in the management of national resources. Edu has been directed to hand over to the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.

A panel, led by the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance, has been tasked by the President to conduct a comprehensive diagnostic on the financial architecture of the social investment programs. The goal is to reform relevant institutions and programs to eliminate institutional frailties, regaining public confidence in the initiative.

Despite Edu’s denial of any wrongdoing and her defense of the N585 million payment, President Tinubu ordered a comprehensive probe into the alleged scandal and vowed to decisively punish those involved in any breaches and infractions uncovered during the investigations.

In a surprising turn of events, following her suspension, Edu’s attempt to discuss the matter with President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa was thwarted. Although she cleared security checks up to the President’s office, she was blocked from seeing him. Her access tag to the villa was promptly withdrawn, and she was escorted out in a State House security vehicle.

Contrary to initial reports, the EFCC is yet to summon the suspended minister for questioning, and a source revealed that the process of inviting Edu to the EFCC was still underway. The unfolding events continue to raise questions about the alleged financial improprieties and the ensuing fallout within the government.
