Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, has called on Christians and Muslims across the country to use the concurrent observance of Ramadan and Lent to pray for Nigeria’s unity, peace, and prosperity.
Describing the overlapping sacred seasons as spiritually symbolic, the governor said the moment presents a rare opportunity for national reflection, sacrifice, and renewed commitment to faith-driven values.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by his Chief Press Secretary, Patrick Ebojele, Okpebholo urged both faith communities to lift the nation before God in prayer and seek divine intervention in the affairs of Edo State and Nigeria as a whole.
“This is a profound spiritual moment for our nation. As Muslims fast and Christians observe Lent, I encourage all faithful to lift Nigeria before God in prayer and supplication. Let us seek divine guidance to overcome our challenges and build a more united, prosperous, and peaceful country,” the governor stated.
He specifically encouraged prayers for national unity, economic stability, improved security, and lasting peace, noting that the solemn seasons of fasting and reflection should inspire love, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence.
Okpebholo also wished Muslims a spiritually rewarding Ramadan and Christians a grace-filled Lenten season, expressing hope that the period would bring renewed strength and blessings to families in Edo State and beyond.
Meanwhile, the President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Sa’ad Abubakar III, announced that Wednesday, February 18, 2026, marks the first day of Ramadan 1447AH in Nigeria.
The Sultan, who is the spiritual leader of Muslims in the country, confirmed that the crescent moon was sighted in several parts of Nigeria on Tuesday, the 29th day of Sha’aban, signaling the commencement of the holy month.
