NANS Calls for Transparent Management of New Student Loan Scheme

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called for transparency in the implementation of the recently introduced student loan scheme by the federal government. In a detailed statement released on Friday, NANS President Pedro Obi emphasized the need for individuals with unquestionable integrity and competence to manage the disbursement of these loans to ensure the scheme’s success and sustainability.

NANS underscored the importance of this initiative in alleviating the financial burdens faced by students and their families. The student body also highlighted the potential of the scheme to reduce the exodus of Nigerian students to foreign countries for their education.

Pedro Obi, in his statement made available to journalists in Abeokuta, commended President Bola Tinubu’s administration for initiating the student loan scheme. He urged the government to engage all relevant stakeholders in the implementation process to ensure that the loan scheme operates transparently and efficiently.

“To ensure the success and integrity of the student loan scheme, we urge the federal government to prioritize transparency and accountability in the disbursement of the loans, and this must be done by engaging all relevant stakeholders,” Obi stated. “It is crucial that the government appoint individuals of unquestionable integrity and competence to oversee the disbursement of student loans. These appointees should be drawn from diverse backgrounds, including academia, finance, and civil society, to ensure a balanced and fair administration.”

NANS also called for effective monitoring mechanisms to track the disbursement process, suggesting regular audits, public reporting, and feedback channels for students to report any issues or irregularities. The association stressed that the loan scheme should be inclusive and accessible to all eligible students, with clearly defined criteria for loan eligibility and repayment terms to avoid any ambiguity or discrimination.

In addition to their call for transparency in the student loan scheme, NANS also addressed the recent deportation of Nigerian students from Teesside University in the UK due to non-payment of school fees. They demanded that the federal government take immediate and decisive action to protect the rights and futures of Nigerian students abroad.

“We believe that with careful planning and execution, the student loan scheme will not only enhance educational opportunities but also contribute significantly to the socio-economic development of Nigeria,” Obi continued. “We extend our full support to the federal government in this endeavor and look forward to seeing the positive impact of this initiative on our nation’s students and educational system.”

NANS’ call for transparency reflects the broader concern among Nigerian students about the fair and efficient management of educational resources and opportunities. The association’s proactive stance highlights its commitment to ensuring that educational policies and initiatives truly benefit the students they are meant to serve.
