Nigeria Aims for Automotive Manufacturing Prominence by 2032, Says Industry Minister

Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment, Doris Uzoka-Anite, unveiled plans on Friday to propel Nigeria into a leading position in the vehicle manufacturing industry. Speaking at the launch of the Nigeria Automotive Industry Development Plan, attended by stakeholders from both the public and private sectors, Uzoka-Anite emphasized the country’s potential to become a significant vehicle manufacturer within the next decade.

“Our goal is to see Nigeria fully producing its own vehicles within 10 years,” stated Uzoka-Anite. “We have the raw materials, skills, and market, and now we have a plan to make it happen.”

The comprehensive plan aims to facilitate the production of a wide range of vehicles, including motorcycles, tricycles, sedans, and heavy-duty trucks. Its implementation involves a proposed five-year tax holiday for vehicle assemblers in Nigeria, as outlined by Joseph Osanipin, Director-General of the National Automotive Design and Development Council.

Key members of the implementation committee include representatives from the Ministries of Finance, Transport, Environment, and Industry, Trade, and Investment, along with the Nigeria Customs Service, Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, and Standards Organisation of Nigeria.

Despite past challenges faced by Nigeria’s vehicle assembling industry, including rising production costs and weakened demand for locally assembled automobiles, the government remains committed to supporting local manufacturing initiatives. The Automotive Policy of 2014 aims to boost local content and establish a vehicle financing scheme to facilitate car purchases by citizens.

However, the industry still grapples with obstacles such as government preference for imported vehicles and inadequate regulations. Currently, Nigeria produces less than 10% of the vehicles used domestically, underscoring the need for concerted efforts to revitalize and expand the local automotive sector.
