Nigeria Procures 12 Alpha Jets from French Air Force to Bolster Air Force Capability

In a significant move to strengthen its air force, Nigeria has acquired 12 pre-owned Alpha Jets from the French Air Force through SOFEMA, a French military and aeronautics company. The announcement was made by Olusegun Dada, Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on social media, who confirmed that all 12 jets are ready for shipping.

Dada, in a statement on X (formerly Twitter), noted that the acquisition would enhance the operational readiness of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF). “As of 2023, the Nigerian Air Force has 11 Alpha Jets in service. These additional jets will further boost our capacity,” he wrote.

Versatile Military Aircraft

The Alpha Jet, developed through a collaboration between France and Germany, is renowned for its versatility as a light attack and advanced trainer aircraft. It can carry a variety of weapons, including bombs, rockets, and missiles, and is equipped with a gun pod suitable for close air support missions.

The acquisition aligns with Nigeria’s broader strategy to modernize its military assets. Dada also highlighted the upcoming delivery of 24 M-346FA light attack aircraft ordered under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, scheduled to arrive early next year.

Renewal of Air Force Fleet

Chief of Air Staff (COAS), Hasan Abubakar, praised the acquisition as part of a broader transformation of the Nigerian Air Force under the leadership of President Tinubu. Abubakar emphasized the renewal of the fleet as a critical step in enhancing operational readiness and combating security challenges.

“This marks a remarkable turnaround for the Nigerian Air Force, which is now equipped to handle diverse security threats more effectively,” Abubakar said.

Long-Term Plans for Maintenance and Expansion

In addition to the Alpha Jets, Abubakar revealed that 24 Leonardo M-346FA aircraft from Italy are also on order, with six already under production. The first batch of three units is expected to be delivered in early 2025, with the full consignment scheduled for 2026.

To ensure the long-term sustainability of these acquisitions, plans are underway to establish a maintenance hub within Nigeria. This initiative aims to reduce reliance on foreign facilities and provide ongoing support for the fleet.

Strategic Alignment with France

The announcement comes shortly after President Tinubu’s state visit to France from November 27 to 30 at the invitation of French President Emmanuel Macron. The visit, which concluded on December 1, underscored Nigeria’s commitment to fostering international partnerships to address its security needs.

President Tinubu has reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting the armed forces in their fight against insecurity, emphasizing the need for a well-equipped and efficient military.

Conclusion

With the procurement of these 12 Alpha Jets and other advanced aircraft on the horizon, Nigeria is taking decisive steps to modernize its air force and bolster its ability to address internal and regional security challenges. This move reflects the government’s strategic focus on strengthening the nation’s defense capabilities.
