Nigerian lady left stranded in the UK following payment of 11.6 million for fraudulent skilled worker visa

A Nigerian woman who travelled to the United Kingdom (UK) has
shared her harrowing

experience of encountering hardships and being forced to
seek food aid and assistance. She recounted falling victim to a deceitful agent
who fraudulently extracted 11.6 million Naira (equivalent to 10,000 pounds)
from her in exchange for a skilled worker visa. Regrettably, upon her arrival
in the UK, she came to the painful realization that the promised job did not
exist.

Opting to remain anonymous, the woman expressed her
disillusionment, expressing that her intention was to be a source of help to
others rather than seeking assistance herself. Her aspirations for financial
autonomy and self-sufficiency were dashed when she uncovered the truth behind
the promised employment.

Blessing’s circumstances are far from being an isolated
incident. Investigations conducted by Sky News have brought to light widespread
exploitation within the UK’s skilled worker visa system. Individuals aspiring
to secure employment in the UK often fall prey to intermediaries who capitalize
on their desperation.

Responding to this issue, a Nigerian Community Centre located
in Greater Manchester has established a food bank to provide support to
individuals like Blessing who find themselves grappling with unfulfilled
employment promises. Mary Adekugbe, the center’s founder, underscored the
escalating numbers of skilled worker visa holders who are in dire need of
assistance.

The repercussions extend to communities, where numerous
individuals who had arrived in the UK with hopes of a brighter future now find
themselves ensnared in poverty and despondency, with some even facing
homelessness. Community leaders and organizations are urging for more stringent
governmental oversight and safeguards to thwart the exploitation of immigrants.

In the year 2022, the UK granted over 170,000 skilled worker
visas, particularly concentrating on sectors such as health and care. This
narrative contributes to the growing pattern of young Nigerians seeking
prospects abroad, particularly in the UK. While the UK government has outlined
a roster of eligible occupations for qualified Nigerians applying for skilled
worker visas, the prevalence of exploitation and deceitful pledges underscores
the hurdles faced by those pursuing these opportunities.
