In a bold move towards economic diversification, Nigeria’s Minister of Arts, Culture, and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, outlined a visionary plan to harness the nation’s creative potential at the 2024 retreat of the Ministry. With the country’s traditional oil revenue facing challenges, Musawa’s proposal aims to position creativity as Nigeria’s new economic powerhouse.
Musawa’s narrative painted a picture of Nigeria’s future, where creativity, not oil, drives economic growth. She pledged to make the creative sector the pride of Nigeria, aiming to create 2 million jobs by 2027 and add $100 billion to the GDP by 2030. The message resonated with attendees, who saw the potential for laughter, drama, and art to become Nigeria’s new exports.
However, challenges loom large on the horizon. Funding constraints and structural issues threaten to derail the ambitious plan. Yet, Musawa remains undeterred, emphasizing the need for unity, integrity, and effective governance to realize the vision.
As the retreat concluded, stakeholders voiced their opinions on the government’s role in shaping the creative industry’s future. While some called for clarity on targets and accountability, others highlighted the industry’s self-reliance and expressed skepticism towards government initiatives.
Kenny Ogungbe, CEO of Kennis Music, urged the Minister to provide a detailed plan to achieve the set targets. Meanwhile, Tunde Akinsanmi of Styl Plus emphasized the industry’s success driven by individual efforts but stressed the need for a structured framework.
Kaycee Oguejiofor, a festival producer, questioned the feasibility of creating 2 million jobs in three years, calling for transparency and collaboration with stakeholders. Obinna Agwu, an A&R Executive, expressed skepticism towards government initiatives, citing a lack of trust and tangible impact.
Despite the challenges, Musawa’s vision has ignited hope and enthusiasm among Nigerians. With the stage set and the audience global, Nigeria’s creative industry stands poised to become a beacon of prosperity for the nation. As the curtain rises on this new chapter, the spotlight is on Nigeria’s creative talents to shine brighter than ever before.
