NLC President Joe Ajaero Released Following Nationwide Outrage Over Arrest by DSS

The President of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, has been released by the Department of State Services (DSS) following his arrest earlier on Monday, which sparked widespread condemnation across the country. Ajaero was reportedly released around 11:10 p.m. after hours of detention, as confirmed by NLC leaders.

Ajaero, who has been vocal in his criticism of government policies, was apprehended by the DSS at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, just as he was about to board a flight to the United Kingdom for an official engagement. Although the exact reasons for his arrest remain unclear, sources suggest it may be linked to his recent activism and stance against certain government decisions.

The DSS’s action led to a wave of backlash from various labor groups, civil society organizations, and political leaders, who condemned the arrest as an attempt to stifle dissent and intimidate the labor movement. Across the country, there were calls for Ajaero’s immediate release, with many describing his detention as an attack on workers’ rights and freedom of speech.

Reacting to the situation, NLC leaders expressed relief at Ajaero’s release but maintained that his arrest was unnecessary and provocative. One NLC leader, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, stated, “This arrest is a direct attack on the labor movement. We will not be intimidated by this show of force.”

Several human rights organizations also condemned the arrest, calling it a violation of democratic principles. The Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) issued a statement demanding that the DSS respect the rule of law and the rights of citizens to organize and protest peacefully.

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) added its voice to the growing criticism, noting that the arrest was an indication of the government’s increasing intolerance for opposing views. In a statement, the TUC called for a transparent investigation into the incident to ensure that such actions do not undermine Nigeria’s democratic process.

Meanwhile, the DSS has yet to release an official statement regarding the arrest, but sources within the agency hinted that the move was part of ongoing investigations into activities considered a threat to national security. However, critics argue that such justifications are often used to clamp down on legitimate dissent.

Ajaero’s arrest and subsequent release come amid heightened tensions between labor unions and the government, particularly over issues related to economic policies and workers’ welfare. In recent months, the NLC, under Ajaero’s leadership, has been at the forefront of protests and strikes aimed at pushing for better wages and working conditions for Nigerian workers.

As the nation reacts to this incident, many are calling on the government to engage in meaningful dialogue with labor unions to address their concerns rather than resorting to intimidation or suppression.
