The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has disclosed its pivotal role in supporting the Dangote Petroleum Refinery with a $1 billion loan backed by crude oil. This strategic intervention underscores the company’s commitment to fostering public-private partnerships aimed at driving national development.
The revelation was made by the Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPCL, Olufemi Soneye, during the Energy Relations Stakeholders Engagement held in Abuja on Monday. Soneye also highlighted NNPCL’s role in facilitating the $3 billion Gazelle loan to stabilize Nigeria’s foreign exchange market during a critical period.
Supporting Dangote Refinery
Soneye described the $1 billion crude-backed loan as instrumental in addressing liquidity challenges faced by the Dangote Refinery, enabling the establishment of Nigeria’s first private refinery.
“This initiative underscores NNPC’s dedication to fostering public-private partnerships that drive national development,” Soneye stated.
The Dangote Refinery, a flagship project in Nigeria’s energy sector, is expected to significantly reduce the nation’s dependency on imported petroleum products, boosting energy self-sufficiency and economic growth.
Stabilizing Nigeria’s Forex Market
Soneye also highlighted NNPCL’s role in arranging the $3.3 billion Gazelle syndicated loan in collaboration with Afreximbank. Secured in January 2024, the deal was recognized as the largest crude-backed facility in Nigeria and one of the most significant syndicated debts raised in Africa.
“Under the visionary leadership of Mele Kyari, NNPC Ltd has achieved groundbreaking milestones, redefining the trajectory of Nigeria’s oil and gas sector. The $3 billion Gazelle loan was a critical intervention that helped stabilize the federation during a challenging foreign exchange crisis,” Soneye said.
Reviving Refining Capacity and Energy Reforms
NNPCL also celebrated the restart of the Port Harcourt Refining Company as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s journey toward energy self-sufficiency. Soneye reiterated the company’s commitment to revitalizing the nation’s refining capacity and providing sustainable energy solutions.
As part of its energy diversification efforts, NNPCL has championed the adoption of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as an alternative energy source. This initiative provides Nigerians with a cleaner and more cost-effective energy option amid rising global energy costs.
Financial Turnaround and Visionary Leadership
NNPCL has recorded significant financial achievements under Mele Kyari’s leadership. For the first time in decades, the company declared profit and exceeded its profit projections for 2024, signaling a transformative turnaround.
Soneye attributed these successes to the company’s strategic reforms, adding that NNPCL remains focused on strengthening Nigeria’s energy sector and positioning itself as a global leader in the energy industry.
Collaboration and Sustainability
During the stakeholders’ meeting, Soneye emphasized the importance of collaboration and innovation in shaping the future of energy. He acknowledged the critical role stakeholders play in advancing NNPCL’s vision of ensuring energy security, economic growth, and environmental stewardship.
“Together, we stand at the forefront of a transformative era in the global energy landscape, where collaboration, innovation, and sustainability are key to success,” he said.
NNPCL’s energy relations strategy focuses on fostering meaningful partnerships, driving excellence, and delivering value across the energy value chain. The company reaffirmed its commitment to aligning its operations with sustainable development goals while ensuring the country’s energy security and economic resilience.
This series of initiatives highlights NNPCL’s evolving role as a transformative force in Nigeria’s energy sector, showcasing its dedication to fostering innovation, driving economic growth, and ensuring sustainability.
