The 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has voiced grave concerns about the stark developmental deficits in Northern Nigeria, calling for immediate interventions in education and agriculture to address the region’s stagnation.

Speaking on Saturday in Jos, Plateau State, during an event commemorating the 50th anniversary of Sheikh Ibrahim Nyass’s historic visit to Nigeria, Sanusi highlighted the urgent need for reforms to unlock the region’s potential. The former Emir identified Northern Nigeria’s failure to capitalize on its vast population and natural resources as a key factor behind its slow development.

Underutilized Potential in Agriculture

Sanusi criticized the prevalent reliance on subsistence farming, describing it as a major limitation to economic progress. He emphasized that without access to modern farming practices and technologies, the region would remain stuck in a cycle of poverty and underdevelopment.

“Our region has vast agricultural potential, yet most of our farmers still depend on outdated methods. The North must wake up and embrace modern agricultural techniques to ensure food security and economic growth,” he urged.

Education as a Path to Prosperity

The former Emir also stressed the critical role of education in reversing the North’s fortunes. He called on leaders and stakeholders to prioritize investments in educational infrastructure and programs, noting that an educated populace is essential for sustainable development.

“The future of the North hinges on our commitment to education. It is only through education that we can empower our youth and uplift the region,” Sanusi stated.

Advocating for Peace and Harmony

Sanusi’s address also touched on the importance of peaceful coexistence in multiethnic and religious communities. Reflecting on Sheikh Ibrahim Nyass’s visit to Nigeria 50 years ago, Sanusi praised the Senegalese cleric’s efforts in fostering harmony among diverse groups in the former Benue-Plateau State.

“Sheikh Nyass was a beacon of peace, uniting Muslims and non-Muslims alike. His visit, supported by the then Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, my grandfather Muhammadu Sanusi I, and Governor J. D. Gomwalk, was a landmark event in promoting interfaith harmony,” Sanusi remarked.

He called on Muslims in Plateau State and beyond to actively collaborate with government authorities to maintain peace and drive development.

Praise for Plateau State Administration

Sanusi commended the Plateau State government for its inclusive policies and support for the Muslim community. He encouraged continued cooperation between the state administration and religious groups to foster unity and progress.

“Peace and collaboration are indispensable for achieving sustainable development and societal harmony,” he said.

A Call to Action

As Northern Nigeria continues to grapple with high levels of poverty and underdevelopment, Sanusi’s remarks serve as a clarion call to the region’s leaders and stakeholders. He urged them to embrace reforms and strategic investments in key sectors to transform the region’s prospects.

With education, agriculture, and interfaith harmony as pillars of progress, Sanusi believes Northern Nigeria can overcome its challenges and chart a course toward a brighter future.
