The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Anambra State Command has initiated a robust “show of force” operation in preparation for the nationwide protests scheduled to commence on August 1. This strategic exercise is designed to ensure a secure and peaceful environment in the state.
Led by the State Commandant, Maku Olatunde, NSCDC officers demonstrated their readiness and commitment by patrolling key routes throughout Anambra. The operation kicked off from the state command headquarters in Awka and extended to significant areas including the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, Ziks Avenue, Regina Caeli Junction, Kwata Junction, New Parts Nkpor, Nkpor-Junction, Borromeo Roundabout, Awka Road, DMGS Roundabout, Upper New Market Road, Oguta Road, and concluded at the Head Bridge in Onitsha.
The presence of NSCDC personnel across these routes was a clear display of the command’s capability to maintain order and safety. Commandant Olatunde emphasized that this show of force, set to continue until August 12, is a proactive measure aimed at deterring any potential threats to national assets and infrastructure.
“This initiative seeks to prevent acts of vandalism, breaches of peace, and lawlessness that may arise in connection with the planned protests,” Olatunde stated. “Our coordinated efforts with other security agencies in Anambra State demonstrate that we are fully prepared to take decisive action against any individuals who might attempt to disrupt the peace under the guise of protest.”
He further advised youths not to be swayed into causing unrest or damaging public infrastructure. He called on citizens to support security efforts by reporting any suspicious activities that could jeopardize the state’s relative peace.
In addition to addressing the public, Commandant Olatunde also issued a stern warning to his officers and men. He stressed the importance of maintaining professional conduct, warning that any unprofessional behavior would be met with strict disciplinary action.
“In carrying out your duties, exercise extreme caution and vigilance,” he instructed. “Show exemplary self-control, avoid being trigger-happy, and prioritize de-escalation techniques to ensure a peaceful resolution.”
The NSCDC’s assertive stance and collaborative efforts with other security agencies underline a comprehensive approach to safeguarding Anambra State during the upcoming protests, reinforcing the state’s commitment to public safety and security.
