The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has been thrown into mourning following the death of its Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Prof. Abdulgafar Siyan Oyeweso, who passed away on Tuesday at the age of 64.
Prof. Oyeweso, a distinguished historian and respected academic, reportedly died in a hospital after undergoing what family members described as a successful surgical procedure.
His death was confirmed in a statement released by Olawale Oyeweso on behalf of the family.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father and brother, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council of Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife, Professor Abdulgafar Siyan Oyeweso, who departed this life on Tuesday, December 2nd, 2025, at the age of 64 after a brief illness,” the statement said.
The family highlighted Oyeweso’s legacy as a scholar, mentor, and educator who impacted generations of students, colleagues, and political associates.
He is survived by his wife, children, and extended family members.
The late professor’s remains will be laid to rest today in his hometown of Ede at 4 p.m., immediately after the Ashri prayer.
