Obi Sets 2027 Target, Says Rescue Mission Will Be One-Term Presidency

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has confirmed his intention to run in the 2027 presidential election, assuring his supporters that he is committed to serving only a single four-year term if elected.

Speaking during a late-night session on X (formerly Twitter) Spaces with thousands of listeners across Nigeria and the diaspora, Obi outlined his renewed vision for the country, rooted in sacrifice, unity, and responsible leadership.

According to a statement released by the Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR) and signed by spokesman Ibrahim Umar, Obi reiterated that his political ambition is not fueled by personal gain but by a strong desire to rescue Nigeria from deepening insecurity, poverty, and systemic dysfunction.

“If there is any form of agreement that will restrict me to four years in office, I will comply and be ready to leave by May 28, 2031,” he said. “Nigeria is at war — from hunger to killings in Benue and Zamfara. This country needs urgent intervention, and I am willing to lead that mission with a clear exit plan.”

Obi also addressed growing speculation about a possible alliance with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar or other joint ticket arrangements. He denied any formal discussions or agreements in that regard, stating: “I have not entered into any joint ticket arrangement with anyone. I am still with the Labour Party and working to secure full recognition of our leadership by INEC.”

On coalition-building efforts ahead of the 2027 race, Obi confirmed ongoing conversations with other political actors and civil society groups. “We will adopt a party, and I believe patriotic Nigerians will unite to rescue this country,” he said. “However, if it’s not about ending insecurity, reviving the economy, and improving the lives of ordinary citizens, count me out.”

He called on Nigerians to join his vision for a reformed, people-centered government, vowing to deliver national stability within his first two years in office. “My government will prioritise security, education, and poverty eradication. These are not campaign promises — they are measurable goals,” Obi said.

Taking a swipe at President Bola Tinubu, Obi criticised the President’s recent vacation to St. Lucia, calling it a sign of misplaced priorities. “In two years, the President has not spent a night in any Nigerian state apart from Lagos. Yet he plans to spend eight nights in St. Lucia, a country smaller than Ajegunle. That’s unacceptable.”

Obi also reaffirmed his belief in the principle of power rotation between the north and south, citing his record in Anambra State where he ensured zoning in local leadership.

On Labour Party’s internal wranglings, he said efforts are underway to resolve disputes and ensure the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officially recognises the Nenadi Usman-led leadership, based on the Supreme Court’s direction.

Looking ahead, Obi promised a different approach to electioneering in 2027. “We will not wait until results are announced in Abuja before reacting. This time, we will ensure our votes count — and we will insist on transparency, peace, and justice.”

He also pledged that under his leadership, elected officials would not be allowed to defect to other parties, and his administration would run a lean, corruption-free government.

“My family will never be involved in governance or corruption. Nigeria needs order, and that begins with integrity at the top,” he said. “Anyone who seeks to lead must be ready to put their life on the line for the people. That’s what true leadership demands.”

Obi’s declaration and detailed policy intentions have reignited discussions around 2027, positioning him once again as a central figure in Nigeria’s political future.
