Obidient Mobilisation Chief Monye Resigns Over Poor Coordination

The Obidient Movement has suffered a major shake-up following the resignation of its Director of Mobilisation, Morris Monye, who cited poor coordination, lack of funding, and disappointing electoral results as reasons for stepping down.

Monye announced his resignation in a statement on Thursday via his official X handle, expressing frustration over what he described as the movement’s “optics without work” approach and its underwhelming performance in the recent Anambra governorship election.

“Almost a year down the line, most of our short, medium, and long-term plans have not been met. I won’t be part of optics and no work. The poor showing at the Anambra election has also made my position untenable,” he stated.

According to Monye, he personally financed most mobilisation efforts across the country — including travel, voter awareness, local structure support, and logistics — without any financial assistance from the movement’s leadership or its presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi.

“No money was given to the Directorate of Mobilisation. There’s no bank account even for the directorate. In fact, Mr. Peter Obi has never asked what we are doing in mobilisation — no communication, nothing,” he alleged.

Monye also disclosed that his involvement had attracted harassment from government supporters, adding that the toll on his family and business made it necessary for him to step aside.

He outlined several contributions to the movement, such as developing an online registration platform for members, reviving dormant support groups, setting up regional offices, and launching the Obidient NextGen university campus network. He also revealed plans to equip polling agents with affordable body cameras for election monitoring, a project he urged his successor to complete.

Having submitted his resignation to Peter Obi, National Coordinator Dr. Yunusa Tanko, and his state coordinator, Monye said he would now refocus on his private ventures and pursue a business course at Oxford or Cambridge University.

Offering advice to the movement, Monye called on Obi to “engage professional consultants, fund the directorates, and adopt a results-driven structure,” warning that goodwill alone cannot sustain political momentum.

“You can’t run a campaign simply from general goodwill. This is not 2023. The element of surprise is gone,” he said.

Monye, regarded as one of the key architects of the Obidient Movement’s grassroots mobilisation, described his time in the group as a “privilege” but insisted it was time for new leadership to take the reins.

The Obidient Movement, which rose to prominence during the 2023 general elections, was founded on widespread youth support for Peter Obi’s reformist message. However, its recent electoral setbacks — including a meagre 1.5% vote share in the November 2025 Anambra governorship poll — have raised fresh questions about its internal cohesion and long-term viability.
