The Ogun State Government has extended a donation of N200 million to Borno State to aid in relief efforts for victims of the devastating flood that recently ravaged the state. The disaster has displaced thousands of residents, destroyed property, and caused significant humanitarian challenges.
Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State had earlier expressed his condolences to the government and people of Borno, commending the swift response by the state authorities, alongside interventions from the Federal Government.
In a statement released on Saturday, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, announced the donation, stating that the financial support was aimed at providing immediate relief to the flood victims. “The gesture is aimed at assisting the victims of the flood and providing immediate relief,” Akinmade noted.
Governor Abiodun emphasized the severity of the situation, describing the flood as a “humanitarian crisis” that requires collective action from Nigerians. “The flood has caused an unimaginable crisis in Borno State, and this necessitates urgent support to bring relief to the affected people,” he said.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) had earlier reported that the flooding occurred after the Alau Dam overflowed due to heavy rainfall, marking the worst flooding the region has experienced in 30 years. According to NEMA, the flood has displaced over 414,000 people and claimed at least 30 lives in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State.
The donation from Ogun State is part of ongoing efforts to support recovery and relief operations in Borno as the government and aid agencies work to manage the aftermath of the disaster and provide assistance to the displaced population.
