Nze Fidelis Chukwu, a prominent figure from Imo State, has been appointed as the new President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, the apex socio-cultural organization of the Igbo people.
The announcement followed a crucial Imeobi and General Assembly meeting held on Saturday in Enugu. The meeting’s resolutions were outlined in a communiqué signed by Okey Emuchay, Secretary-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide.
Unanimous Decision Amidst Leadership Transitions
The motion to adopt Nze Chukwu’s appointment was moved by Eze Cletus Ilomuanya, Chairman of the Imo Council of Elders, and seconded by Chief Simon Okeke. His emergence comes as part of efforts to address ongoing leadership challenges within the organization.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide faced significant upheaval beginning in 2022 with the passing of former President-General Prof. George Obiozor. In response, Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu was sworn in to complete Imo State’s four-year tenure on April 30, 2023. Tragically, Iwuanyanwu passed away on July 25, 2024, and was laid to rest on November 1.
Nze Chukwu’s leadership is expected to last only 27 days, until January 10, 2025, marking the conclusion of Imo State’s allocated tenure for the office.
Swearing-In Ceremony
Nze Chukwu was officially sworn in as the President-General by the National Legal Adviser, Joseph Ojobu, and Assistant Legal Adviser, Peter Aneke. The event was attended by key stakeholders, including representatives from the Southeast Governors’ Forum, led by Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State.
Governor Mbah emphasized the importance of ensuring that the upcoming Ohanaeze elections are transparent, inclusive, and credible.
Doctrine of Necessity
The Imo State chapter of Ohanaeze, represented by Mr. C.J. Ihemedu, presented Chukwu’s nomination as a measure in line with the doctrine of necessity to complete the remaining tenure allotted to Imo State.
“In line with the doctrine of necessity, the Imeobi Ohanaeze unanimously adopted Chukwu’s nomination through a voice vote,” Emuchay stated.
Regional Support
Ohanaeze State Presidents from Abia, Anambra, Delta, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Rivers States expressed strong support for Chukwu’s appointment. They described his selection as a stabilizing step for the organization during this transitional period.
Expectations for Leadership
Nze Fidelis Chukwu now faces the task of leading Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide for the brief remainder of the Imo tenure while setting the stage for a smooth and credible election to usher in the next administration.
As Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide continues to play a pivotal role in advocating for the unity and progress of the Igbo people, the leadership transition marks a critical moment for the organization and its mission.
