Former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi has been selected by President-elect Donald Trump as his nominee for U.S. attorney general, replacing Matt Gaetz, who withdrew amid controversy. Trump announced Bondi’s nomination on Thursday, citing her extensive legal background and alignment with his administration’s priorities.
Bondi’s Track Record
“Pam was a prosecutor for nearly 20 years, where she was very tough on violent criminals and made the streets safe for Florida families,” Trump said in a statement. “As Florida’s first female attorney general, she worked to combat drug trafficking and reduce the tragedy of fentanyl overdose deaths, which have destroyed many families across our country.”
Bondi, 59, served as Florida’s attorney general from 2011 to 2019, becoming the first woman elected to the position. She also played a key role in Trump’s defense during his first impeachment trial in 2019, where he faced accusations of abusing his power to pressure Ukraine into investigating then-political rival Joe Biden. The Senate acquitted Trump on the charges.
Bondi’s nomination is expected to face fewer hurdles in the Senate compared to Gaetz, whose selection was met with resistance from some Republican lawmakers.
From Florida Prosecutor to National Role
Bondi’s legal career spans nearly two decades as a prosecutor before her tenure as Florida’s top law enforcement officer. During Trump’s first term, she served on his Opioid and Drug Abuse Commission and acted as a prominent campaign surrogate. This year, Bondi was among the Republicans who publicly supported Trump during his New York hush-money trial.
If confirmed, Bondi will lead the Department of Justice (DOJ), which oversees more than 100,000 employees, including agencies such as the FBI, DEA, and Bureau of Prisons. The department’s broad responsibilities include prosecuting federal crimes, enforcing civil rights laws, and combating antitrust violations.
Trump’s Confidence in Bondi
“For too long, the partisan Department of Justice has been weaponized against me and other Republicans — not anymore,” Trump declared. “Pam will refocus the DOJ to its intended purpose of fighting crime and making America safe again. I’ve known Pam for many years — she is smart and tough, and is an America First fighter who will do a terrific job as attorney general.”
Gaetz Withdraws Amid Scandal
Bondi’s nomination follows the abrupt withdrawal of Matt Gaetz, a former Florida congressman, who stepped back amid lingering allegations of sexual misconduct. The Department of Justice had investigated claims that Gaetz engaged in statutory rape and paid for a 17-year-old girl to travel across state lines. Though no charges were filed, the House Ethics Committee was also probing the allegations.
Two witnesses reportedly testified before the Ethics Committee, one alleging she had observed Gaetz under the influence of drugs and engaging in inappropriate conduct with the minor. Gaetz has denied the accusations, attributing his withdrawal to the controversy becoming a distraction for Trump’s transition team.
Looking Ahead
Bondi’s nomination signals a strategic shift as Trump aims to restore the DOJ’s focus on crime prevention and conservative policies. If confirmed, Bondi will join a cabinet that underscores Trump’s “America First” vision while facing the challenges of leading one of the most scrutinized departments in the federal government.
