Peter Obi Criticizes 2023 Election as “Show of Shame”

Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate, has strongly criticized the 2023 general elections in Nigeria, describing them as a “show of shame” plagued by allegations of fraud and widespread irregularities. In a series of posts on his X page on Saturday, the former Governor of Anambra State highlighted significant issues with the electoral process, despite the substantial funds allocated for the exercise.

Obi contrasted Nigeria’s elections with the recent elections in South Africa, which he praised for their transparency and efficiency. He noted that the South African election, with about 60% voter turnout, saw over 90% of polling stations open on time and allowed for diaspora voting. The results and updates were provided in real-time without technical glitches, demonstrating the robustness and transparency of their system.

He wrote: “The outcome of the recent South African election results remains a shining example of what a transparent and efficient democratic electoral process should look like. With about 60% voter turnout, over 90% of polling stations open on time, allowing diaspora voting, the results and updates were real-time without any form of technical glitches during the election. This demonstrated the robustness and transparency of their system. The seamless online dissemination of results further highlights their commitment to democratic principles and technological advancement.”

In stark contrast, Obi described Nigeria’s 2023 elections as a dismal failure, with less than 30% voter turnout, over 60% of polling stations starting late, and no provision for diaspora voting. He lamented the allegations of fraud and widespread irregularities, despite the expenditure of approximately one billion dollars (direct allocation of N313 billion and donor agency support).

“The process has been widely discredited. The differences between the two countries’ electoral processes are both stark and lamentable. South Africa’s Election Results Center, with its state-of-the-art electronic board, showcased results with unparalleled precision and speed. Meanwhile, Nigeria’s electoral process is mired in controversy and lacks transparency. This glaring juxtaposition is a painful reminder of our country’s ongoing struggles with democratic governance,” Obi stated.

Obi called for urgent and comprehensive electoral reforms to restore faith in Nigeria’s democracy. He emphasized the need to learn from South Africa’s example and build a system that ensures free, fair, and credible elections.

“The time for action is now, and we cannot afford to delay any longer in addressing these critical issues. For a new Nigeria is possible!” he concluded.
