ABUJA – As part of his ongoing consultations with prominent national figures, Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, held a strategic meeting with former President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday in Abuja. The meeting centered on key national issues, including governance, unity, and the future of Nigeria.
The meeting with Jonathan came shortly after Obi visited Nigeria’s former military president, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB), at his Minna residence, and Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi to condole with him over the recent loss of his son and mother.
In a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Thursday, Obi expressed gratitude for the engagement with Jonathan, describing the former president as a patriotic leader whose commitment to national stability and progress remains noteworthy.
“Finally, on returning to Abuja yesterday, I caught up with my dear elder brother and former President of Nigeria, His Excellency Goodluck Jonathan @GEJonathan, to also wish him a happy new year. I also had the opportunity of discussing germane national issues with him,” Obi wrote.
The former Anambra State governor praised Jonathan’s approach to handling national matters, emphasizing his humility and dedication to Nigeria’s progress. Obi noted that Jonathan provided valuable advice and guidance during their discussion, which he believes will contribute positively to his political and developmental pursuits.
“President Jonathan’s patriotic approach to national issues remains admirable. I appreciate his kind advice and guidance, and I wish him and his family a happy and productive year ahead,” he added.
Obi further stated that his visit with Jonathan marked the conclusion of his New Year engagements, which saw him traversing key states and meeting with influential figures across the country.
Building Bridges for National Unity
Political analysts see Obi’s visits to key political leaders, including Babangida, Namadi, and Jonathan, as strategic moves aimed at fostering national unity and strengthening relationships with Nigeria’s political elite.
Obi’s outreach underscores his commitment to building bridges across political divides as he continues to advocate for good governance, economic reforms, and solutions to Nigeria’s security challenges. His meetings also highlight the importance of collective efforts in addressing the country’s pressing issues.
The discussions with Jonathan are particularly significant given the former president’s reputation as a peace ambassador and his efforts in promoting democratic values across Africa.
Observers believe Obi’s engagements signal his readiness to remain an active voice in Nigeria’s political landscape as the nation gears up for future elections and policy reforms.
As the country faces economic challenges, insecurity, and social unrest, Obi’s focus on dialogue with key stakeholders is seen as a step in the right direction toward fostering stability and progress in Nigeria.
