Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has pledged to meet the bail conditions for human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi, who is currently embroiled in a legal battle over alleged defamation against prominent legal luminary Afe Babalola.
The Case and Bail Terms
An Ekiti Magistrate Court recently granted Farotimi bail following his arraignment on charges of defamation. The court set stringent bail conditions, including a N30 million bond, two sureties (one of whom must be a property owner), the surrender of his passport, and a prohibition from granting media interviews.
Obi Steps In
Peter Obi’s decision to support Farotimi was made public by Tanko Yunusa, his former campaign spokesperson, through a statement shared on Friday via the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
Yunusa explained that Obi, a staunch advocate of the rule of law and due process, viewed this as an opportunity to resolve the situation in a lawful and amicable manner.
“I consulted His Excellency, Peter Obi, as the leader of the Obidient Movement. As a respecter of rule of law, due process, and order, he offered to take Dele Farotimi on the bail conditions,” Yunusa stated.
Gratitude to the Courts and Concern for Justice
Obi expressed gratitude to the judiciary for granting bail and emphasized his desire for the matter to be handled in a way that upholds the integrity of the legal system.
“His concern is that the situation be resolved in the best interest of all parties and our legal system. He extended his sincere appreciation to all concerned,” Yunusa added.
