Jos – In a bid to prevent further chaos and ensure public safety, the Plateau State Government has declared a 24-hour curfew on the Jos/Bukuru metropolis. This decision comes in response to recent looting incidents by hoodlums in various parts of Jos, the state capital.
A statement issued late Sunday night by Gyang Bere, Director of Press and Public Affairs to Governor Caleb Mutfwang, announced, “In a decisive move to enhance the security of lives and maintain public order, Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has imposed a 24-hour curfew on Jos/Bukuru Metropolis, effective from midnight on Sunday, August 4, 2024.”
Governor Mutfwang, in consultation with state security agencies, made this decision after reviewing the actions of criminal elements who took advantage of the nationwide protest to terrorize innocent citizens. Armed with daggers, machetes, and other dangerous weapons, these individuals broke into shops and restaurants along Bauchi Road and Zololo Junction in Jos, looting foodstuffs and other valuable items.
The governor emphasized that the curfew is in the best interest of all citizens and urged everyone to comply fully to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents. He directed state security agencies to enforce the curfew strictly across the Jos/Bukuru metropolis.
He warned those planning further violence to desist immediately or face the full wrath of the law. Governor Mutfwang also called on security agencies to remain vigilant and proactive to prevent any potential disruptions to law and order.
Governor Mutfwang expressed his gratitude to the citizens of Plateau State for their unwavering support of the government’s policies and programs. He praised their peaceful conduct before, during, and after the nationwide protest, saying, “The peaceful conduct of our people is commendable. I urge everyone to continue to uphold this culture of peace as we work together to build a united and progressive Plateau.”
This curfew aims to restore order and protect the lives and properties of residents in the Jos/Bukuru metropolis. Further updates will be provided as the situation develops.
