The Nigeria Police Force confirmed on Saturday the successful rescue of 20 medical students who were abducted along the Otukpo/Otukpa/Enugu Road. The students, from the University of Maiduguri and the University of Jos, were en route to Enugu to attend the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students’ annual convention when they were kidnapped by bandits.
The abduction sparked widespread concern and prompted swift action from the authorities. In response, Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun ordered the deployment of tactical operatives and assets, including helicopters, drones, and tactical vehicles, to ensure the immediate rescue of the students. Additional detectives were also dispatched to Benue State to aid in the operation.
In an official statement released on Saturday, Force Public Relations Officer Muyiwa Adejobi confirmed that the students were rescued without any ransom being paid, contrary to rumors circulating on social media.
“The release of our brothers and sisters, along with other Nigerians who were in captivity, was successfully achieved on Friday, August 23, 2024, in the Ntunkon forest, Benue State,” Adejobi stated. “No ransom was paid, despite some unverified reports suggesting otherwise. The rescue operation was conducted tactically and professionally. We commend the security agencies, local communities, and the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) for their commitment and resilience.”
Adejobi assured that more details would be provided as they become available, and he thanked all involved for their efforts in ensuring the safe return of the abducted students.
