Pope Leo XIV has dismissed the prospect of engaging in a public dispute with former U.S. President Donald Trump, stating that his focus remains firmly on promoting peace rather than political debate.
Speaking to reporters on Monday while aboard the papal aircraft en route to Algeria for his first official visit to Africa, the pontiff responded to recent criticism from Trump regarding his remarks on tensions involving the United States and Iran.
“I am not a politician,” Pope Leo XIV said, making it clear that he does not intend to be drawn into political exchanges. He added that his message remains consistent, centered on fostering peace and dialogue.
The pope’s comments signal a deliberate effort to steer clear of political confrontation, even as global tensions continue to attract attention from both religious and political leaders.
