President Bola Ahmed Tinubu departed Abuja on January 26 for Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, to attend the Africa Heads of State Energy Summit, scheduled to take place from January 27 to 28, 2025.

The high-profile summit will convene African leaders, global development partners, and private sector stakeholders to accelerate access to electricity for 300 million people across Africa by 2030, under the ambitious “Mission 300” initiative.

Nigeria’s Commitment to Energy Transformation

President Tinubu is expected to use the summit as a platform to reaffirm Nigeria’s dedication to achieving universal energy access while underscoring the country’s leadership role in clean and integrated energy solutions across the continent.

“Nigeria remains committed to leading Africa’s energy transformation, ensuring that millions of people gain access to affordable and reliable electricity,” stated Bayo Onanuga, the presidential spokesperson.

The president’s address will focus on Nigeria’s strides in renewable energy development and innovative energy policies, showcasing the country as a regional leader in driving sustainable energy initiatives.

Summit Highlights

The summit will feature presentations from participating countries, outlining their national energy strategies and compacts aimed at tackling the continent’s energy challenges. Discussions will also center on renewable energy, energy efficiency, and strategies to mobilize private investments in the energy sector.

A key outcome of the summit will be the endorsement of the Dar es Salaam Energy Declaration, a landmark agreement that will chart a unified course toward achieving the energy access goals set for 2030.

High-Profile Delegation

President Tinubu is accompanied by a delegation of top government officials, including:

  • Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu
  • Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu
  • Special Adviser on Energy, Olu Verheijen
  • Minister of State for Foreign Affairs

Their participation underscores Nigeria’s intention to collaborate with other nations in addressing the urgent need for sustainable energy solutions on the continent.

Africa’s Energy Landscape in Focus

With over 600 million Africans currently lacking access to electricity, the summit aims to galvanize actionable strategies to bridge this gap. The “Mission 300” initiative serves as a rallying call to prioritize energy access, foster innovation, and encourage investments in Africa’s energy sector.

This marks President Tinubu’s continued commitment to regional collaboration and development. The president is expected to return to Abuja immediately after the conclusion of the summit, signaling his administration’s proactive approach to addressing both domestic and continental challenges.

The Dar es Salaam Energy Summit is poised to become a pivotal moment in Africa’s journey toward energy equity, sustainability, and economic empowerment.
