Members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Monday began assembling at the NLC Secretariat in Abuja ahead of a nationwide protest against the worsening security situation in the country.
The NLC President, Mr. Joe Ajaero, was present at the secretariat alongside leaders of various labour unions and representatives of civil society organisations, as preparations for the protest gathered momentum.
Also at the venue were Mr. Omoyele Sowore and members of the Revolution Now Movement, who joined the demonstration in solidarity with organised labour.
Speaking with journalists, Sowore expressed concern over what he described as a deepening security crisis, accusing the Federal Government of failing in its responsibility to protect citizens.
According to him, the country was “bleeding” as incidents of kidnapping and violence continued unabated. He cited cases of worshippers being abducted from places of worship, regardless of religious affiliation, and noted that more than 250 children were still being held captive in Niger State.
Sowore further lamented the reported capture of Nigerian military personnel, including Air Force members, in Burkina Faso, warning that the situation reflected a breakdown in national security. He called on Nigerians to continue mobilising and speaking out against insecurity, insisting that the situation had become unacceptable.
Meanwhile, security agencies have been deployed around the protest venue to maintain order. Officers of the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) were seen in the area as the gathering continued.
