Blessing Fubara Senior, brother of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, has formally declared his bid for the Rivers State governorship under the platform of the Nigerian Democratic Congress, pledging to govern for only one term if elected.
Announcing his ambition ahead of the party’s primaries, Fubara positioned himself as a reform-minded and energetic contender focused on restoring stability, unity, and economic development in the state.
He said Rivers State had experienced years of economic decline and weakening public trust, arguing that urgent political renewal was necessary to reposition it as a leading economic centre in Nigeria.
The aspirant accused the current situation of eroding investment opportunities and diminishing the state’s reputation, calling on citizens to rally behind what he described as a movement to restore Rivers State’s lost prominence.
Fubara stressed that his candidacy was rooted in public service rather than personal political ambition, reiterating that he would step down after a single term if given the mandate.
He explained that a one-term commitment would help safeguard the state’s existing power-sharing arrangement, which he insisted should remain intact to maintain balance among senatorial districts.
According to him, the Rivers South-East Senatorial District should be allowed to complete its agreed tenure, warning that any disruption could destabilise the state’s political structure.
He further stated that his administration would prioritise peacebuilding, reconciliation, and economic recovery, describing Rivers State as being in urgent need of responsible leadership.
Speaking to supporters, Fubara urged that political influence should be measured by grassroots support rather than financial strength, encouraging mobilisation across all 23 local government areas.
He called for strong participation in the upcoming party primaries and urged supporters to turn out in large numbers at ward and polling unit levels.
The governorship hopeful also appealed to fellow contenders, including his “elder brother” in the race, to reconsider their ambitions and support a unified front in the interest of stability.
He said his candidacy represents a broader push to restore cohesion in Rivers politics, while also ensuring continuity in rotational leadership among senatorial districts.
If elected, Fubara pledged to focus his administration on economic revitalisation, attracting investment, and rebuilding public confidence in governance structures across the state.
