A series of devastating drone attacks in the Russian border region of Belgorod, adjacent to Ukraine, has left two people dead and at least seven injured, according to statements from the governor on Saturday.
The assault, which included both drone and air strikes, wreaked havoc on two districts in Belgorod as well as the regional capital bearing the same name, causing significant damage and casualties. Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov conveyed the grim toll of the attacks, describing collapsed balconies in residential buildings and the tragic loss of life.
Gladkov reported via Telegram that a married couple perished in the strikes, with the husband succumbing to injuries sustained when three balconies collapsed due to an air attack. Additionally, another individual lost their life in a separate drone strike outside the city, adding to the tragedy unfolding in the region.
Meanwhile, in the Samara region located approximately 1,000 kilometers away from the conflict’s front lines, Governor Dmitry Azarov disclosed that several drone attacks targeted local oil refineries overnight. The most significant impact occurred at the Kuibyshev refinery, resulting in a blaze engulfing the facility. Thankfully, there were no reported casualties from the incident.
The Kuibyshev refinery, operated by the Russian oil behemoth Rosneft, stands as one of the largest in the region, boasting an annual production capacity of seven million tonnes. Another refinery in the area, Novokuibyshevsk, managed to repel a drone attack without suffering damage to its vital equipment, according to Azarov.
These assaults come on the heels of a massive aerial assault unleashed by Russia in the ongoing conflict, targeting numerous Ukrainian energy sites and leaving a substantial portion of the population without power temporarily. The escalation in drone warfare marks a concerning development in the protracted conflict, with both sides engaged in retaliatory strikes against critical infrastructure.
