In a somber turn of events, Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, has passed away at the age of 67. Reports indicate that Governor Akeredolu breathed his last around 2 a.m. on Wednesday while undergoing medical treatment in a German hospital. His death follows a protracted battle with prostate cancer and leukemia, ailments that had confined him to immobility for several months.
Background:
Rotimi Akeredolu, a distinguished Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), secured his re-election as the governor of Ondo State in October 2020 and was inaugurated for a second term in February 2021. Unfortunately, his second term was marred by health challenges that led to extended medical leaves.
The 67-year-old governor, who returned to Nigeria in September after months abroad, faced public criticism for attempting to govern from Ibadan, Oyo State, following his medical leave. On December 13, Akeredolu took another medical leave and formally transferred power to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, who assumed the role of acting governor.
Concerns had been raised over the celebration plans for the 70th birthday of Akeredolu’s wife, Betty, despite the governor’s deteriorating health. In a series of Twitter posts on July 9, Betty announced the suspension of the birthday activities due to unforeseen circumstances related to her husband’s health. She expressed regret for any inconvenience and assured that the celebration would take place in style upon her return.
The passing of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu marks the end of an era, and tributes are pouring in as the nation mourns the loss of a legal luminary and political leader. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced as condolences and sympathies are extended to the Akeredolu family and the people of Ondo State.
