In a sincere effort to fulfill his promise of assisting in
the renovation of the Awka and Onitsha mosques
and to celebrate alongside the
Anambra Muslim community during the auspicious occasion of Eid-el-Kabir, Peter
Obi, the Labour Party (LP) Presidential candidate in the 2023 election,
presented cheques worth millions of naira to initiate the renovation projects.
This generous act can be traced back to Obi’s visit to the
Awka and Onitsha Muslim communities in April, where he witnessed the
dilapidated condition of their places of worship. Moved by their plight, he
pledged his support towards their renovation.
During a gathering with the leaders of the Anambra Muslim
Community in the capital city of Anambra, Akwa, Obi expressed his desire to
celebrate Eid Al-Adha with the Muslim community. He emphasized the importance
of brotherly love, unity, and peaceful coexistence among Nigerians, regardless
of their tribe, political affiliation, or religious beliefs.
With great enthusiasm, Obi presented the generous donation to
both the Awka and Onitsha Muslim communities. Addressing the attendees, he
stated, “We are all Nigerians, and we will continue to live as one
irrespective of our religious or political beliefs. What we owe each other is
brotherly love and care, so we can live in peace and unity as a nation. We have
no other nation but Nigeria, and we must make it work.”
Acknowledging the challenging times the country faces, Obi
urged everyone to rise above religious, political, and ethnic divisions. He
firmly believed that by uniting as a nation, Nigeria could overcome its
difficulties and work towards building a New Nigeria that benefits every
citizen. Despite the hardships, Obi’s unwavering dedication to the nation and
its people remained resolute.
The Sarki of the Awka Muslim Community, Alhaji Garba Haruna,
expressed immense admiration for Obi’s simplicity and consistent support. He
praised Obi for being a “truly detribalized Nigerian,” as his
presence and involvement in their Sallah celebration demonstrated his
commitment to bridging divides and fostering unity among diverse groups.
