Former
Nigerian lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani, recently spoke out about the importance
of the Labour
Party’s supporters, also known as “Obidients,” in
Nigeria’s democracy. According to Sani, these supporters are crucial for the
country’s nascent democracy to thrive, as they are currently giving the ruling
All Progressives Congress (APC) a tough time and have become a bone stuck in
their neck.
As a social
critic, Sani took to Twitter on Wednesday to express his opinion on the matter.
He stated that if the supporters of the Labour Party were removed from the
political space, Nigeria would become a dictatorship. In his eyes, the actions
of the Obidients are why the nation has been saved from tyranny.
Sani’s
comments came in light of the ongoing challenge to the declaration of Bola
Tinubu of the APC as the winner of the February 25 election by the candidate of
the Labour Party. The LP candidate is fighting the results and challenging the
legitimacy of Tinubu’s victory.
In his
tweet, Sani emphasized the importance of having opposition in a democracy. He
believes that without the Obidients, Nigeria would have no check on the power
of the ruling APC and that this could lead to a dictatorship.
Sani’s
comments are a reminder of the importance of a vibrant opposition in any
democratic society. Without opposition, the ruling party could become complacent
and abuse its power, which could ultimately lead to the downfall of democracy.
