Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State has expressed his
concern and condemnation regarding the
brutal killing of a butcher in the state
who was accused of blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad. In a statement issued by
his spokesperson, Abubakar Bawa, the Governor made it clear that his
administration would not tolerate any action that degrades the Prophet,
particularly in a predominantly Muslim state like Sokoto.
The Governor urged the residents not to take the law into
their own hands and instead remain calm and law-abiding. He assured them that
the matter was receiving the attention of the relevant authorities. The
Governor emphasized that while acts of disrespect towards the Prophet would not
be condoned, it was important for the people of Sokoto to understand that
Islamic teachings do not permit them to mete out punishment themselves.
The incident involving the mob killing of the butcher, Usman
Buda, over an alleged blasphemous comment, was confirmed in a statement by the
Public Relations Officer of the Sokoto State Command, ASP Ahmad Rufa’i.
According to the statement, a team of policemen led by the Commissioner of
Police, the Area Commander Metro, and the DPO Kwanni, arrived at the scene only
to find the mob had dispersed and Buda was left unconscious. He was rushed to
Usmanu Danfodio Teaching Hospital Sokoto (UDUTH), where he was later pronounced
dead.
Governor Aliyu stressed that the people of Sokoto hold deep
respect and regard for Prophet Muhammad, and therefore, it is essential for all
residents to respect and protect his dignity and honor. He urged the people of
Sokoto State to refrain from taking the law into their own hands and instead
report any alleged crimes or instances of blasphemy to the appropriate
authorities for necessary action.
The Governor’s spokesperson, Abubakar Bawa, reiterated the
Governor’s stance and warned the people against causing trouble. He assured
them that the administration would prioritize the safety of lives and property.
Bawa emphasized that the government would not treat the issue of blasphemy
lightly and would take decisive action against anyone found guilty of degrading
the personality of Prophet Muhammad, in accordance with Islamic laws.
Governor Aliyu reassured the people of Sokoto State of his
administration’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all
law-abiding citizens. He also issued a warning to potential troublemakers,
urging them to reconsider their actions and reminding them that Sokoto is not a
suitable place for such behavior.
